In 2012, the total revenues of Taiwan's biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries was USD8,881 million, a growth of 9.4% over revenues of USD7,829 million in 2011. 2012 was the fastest growing year since 2007. The applied biotechnology sector including biotechnology/pharmaceutical services, special biotechnology, food biotechnology, agricultural biotechnology, and environmental biotechnology, had revenues totaling USD2,492 million. Revenues from the pharmaceutical sector were USD2,701 million, with USD3,687 million posted from the medical device industry. 69,470 people work in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries in more than 1,500 companies. Domestic market demand was calculated to be USD12,592 million in 2012.
